Gary Huonker, July Building and Trades MVP

Alise Martiny of the Kansas City Building and Trades Council joined Slacker on 101 the Fox, Kansas City’s classic rock station, on July 2nd to “Spotlight the Men and Women of Labor”, just as they do every month outside of the football season. The Monthly Building and Trades MVP for July was announced as Gary Huonker of Local Sheetmetal 2. Gary, who Alise described as “an outstanding craftsman” and “such a supporter of building and trades.” He was nominated by his Local. He started with Local 2 in 1979, joining his father and older brother in the trade. Gary, “who didn’t have a plan”, was directed into the trade by his father “who did have a plan for (him).” As many members know, the trades are a fantastic way to make a solid living while working with your hands. He spent thirty years in the field before spending twelve years as a Business Representative for Local 2. He recently retired and is now spending his time fishing with his older brother and relaxing. He enjoys riding his Harley and scuba diving, something he has done for thirty-five years and wants to teach his granddaughter. Gary is also on the PIAC Advisory Committee, appointed by Councilman Kevin O’Neill, where they seek to make recommendations to improve infrastructure in neighborhoods across the city.
