Every month on 101 The Fox, the Greater Kansas City Building and Trades Council celebrates and honors those men and women who help build our city. The Greater Kansas City Building and Trades Council Business Manager, Alise Martiny and radio host Slacker, welcomed our most recent MVPs, husband and wife team, Mike and Sally Hatcher.

Sally and Mike are both members of IBEW Local 124 where Sally has been a member of the local for 37 years and Mike will celebrate 45 years this year. Mike and Sally were nominated by IBEW Local 124 Business Manager, John Fennesy and Business Representative, Roger Beach.

Mike met Sally when she was introduced to the family by his sister and were married three years later. They have been fortunate to have a wonderful partnership both at work and home. Mike and Sally worked side by side for roughly six years before they started working for other companies. Mike told the story where at one point, oddly enough, Sally was Mike’s foreman when building the American Century second tower. Mike said, “It was exciting to work with each other.” Sally was recognized for being a mentor to so many women in the trades. When asked what she would say to women considering entering the trade, Sally replied. “By all means, go for it! Keep your nose to the grindstone, let comments roll off your back, do your job, and you will be rewarded.” Mike was also asked what he would say to those considering joining a union, “Go for it, it has been a blessing, with a great pay grade and benefits.” he said. “I had a heart transplant and with our two insurance policies we had very little out of pocket expense after the extensive procedure. The benefits also provide dental and eye coverage and your entire family will be taken care of. You will be very happy.” Mike declared he is in perfect health after 7 years and 7 months from the date of his heart transplant surgery. Because of this blessing, Mike became heavily involved in the Transplant Recipients International Organization where he holds the position of President for the local chapter in Kansas City. Mike also holds the position of Vice President of the International Trio based out of Philadelphia. The organization is committed to improving the quality of life of transplant candidates, recipients, their families and the families of organ and tissue donors. Mike is an invaluable player in helping both the local and International organizations.  A well deserved MVP spotlight for this husband and wife team who have given back to their community through their volunteer efforts and their many years of dedication to their union, IBEW Local 124. On behalf of the Greater Kansas City Building and Trades, IBEW Local 124, and all the many union brothers and sisters, thank you both for your service.
